Filippo Ganna, the hour record in focus ?

by William Duvigneau

The performance of Italian young never cease to amaze. Already triple world champion in individual track pursuit, several times European and Italian champion, but also bronze medalist at the recent time trial world championships, all at only 23 years, the resident of the Ineos team made an impression during the Minsk World Cup round in Belarus, during which he twice broke the individual pursuit world record held by Ashton Lambie. An exceptional performance that propelled him to the top of his discipline, a few months before the Tokyo Olympic Games. If the latter will undoubtedly be the main objective of the person concerned for 2020, the question arises as to its ability to tackle the legendary hour record, owned since this year by the Belgian Victor Campenaerts. An effort certainly very different from 4 kilometers of pursuit, but which could suit him perfectly. Indeed, his riding qualities go far beyond the track and very short efforts. Remember that time trials on the road during world championships often exceed the hour of effort, a discipline in which he has already shown the full extent of his potential. Also 2nd in the difficult Tour de San Juan in 2018, the Italian is capable of shining on very diverse terrains, and will probably not be limited to the pursuit. The hour record could be the logical continuation of his exploits, and seems completely within his reach. His size, 1m93, the advantage over linear efforts requiring a lot of power, and an attempt against the hour record could perfectly match his qualities. The last Italian hour record holder, Ercole Baldini, had attempted the record in 1956, long before the great champions of the years 1970-1980 do not seize the record. Presented as the new Francesco Moser upon his arrival among the professionals, Filippo Ganna could allow Italy to reconnect with its glorious past in the solitary effort, highlighted by the exploits of Francesco Moser, hour record holder in 1984, before the performances of the time were erased due to the evolution of the bikes used, deemed too advantageous by the UCI. At any rate, Filippo Ganna could well try his luck in the coming years, although the current trend has shown that the best riders sometimes turn away from this legendary record, as is the case with Tom Dumoulin or Chris Froome for example
