The cyclocross world championships are supposed to be held this weekend in Ostend, in Belgium. Wout Van Aert and Mathieu Van Der Poel, who have been going blow for blow for several weeks, promise a great show. But the municipality of Ostend has been facing an upsurge in Covid-19 cases for several days and, more disturbing, the number of cases of the South African variant. A situation that worries the authorities to the point that the holding of the worlds is being discussed. Indeed, no risk can be taken to organize the event, high point of this special winter season. The mayor of the city, Bart Tommelein, referred to this possibility in these terms : “Considering the situation, we must make sure today to bring as few people as possible into the city. If it appears that the number of cases is increasing, we would be forced to make decisions we don't want to make. But it will anyway be done in consultation with the ministers, the Belgian federation and the UCI”.
