Portrait of Lorena Wiebes, world sprint queen

Lorena Wiebes' name isn't the best known of the women's peloton, and yet, the young Dutch sprinter turned out to be, for a few years now, one of the fastest runners in the world.

An express adaptation to the road

Arrival in cycling at the age of 9 years, Lorena Wiebes started with cyclo-cross before a switch to the road which proved inconclusive and which pushed her to return to cyclo-cross. It is finally in 2016 that Lorena Wiebes devotes herself fully to the road and then reveals herself in 2017, by becoming Dutch champion then European road champion, both in the Junior category.

The Dutchwoman did not really have any time of adaptation during her transition to the professionals since from 2019 she becomes number 1 world with a title of champion of the Netherlands and the victory of the Ride-London Classic in particular. Following these successes, the sprinter is coveted by a lot of teams and wishes to join one of them however, she is still under contract with the Parkhotel team, who doesn't want to lose her. Finally, she joined the Sunweb team mid-season. It is under these colors that Lorena Wiebes will explode for good in the eyes of the public, especially in 2022, by winning some major races, like her two stage victories in the Tour de France Femmes (where she was able to wear the yellow jersey), the Ride-London Classic or her title of European road champion. So, just 23 years, Lorena Wiebes has already built a solid track record.

What future for her within SD Worx?

he varies his cycling outings by devoting a large part of his training to cyclo-cross 2023, that it will start tomorrow on the UAE Tour, Lorena Wiebes has decided to leave the German training of Team DSM to join and strengthen the SD Worx team. The latter, already well armed in the hunt for victories, notably Demi Vollering and Lotte Kopecky, offered itself a new star of the peloton, in a different register from the other two leaders. The Dutchwoman could therefore start in the most beautiful way this season 2023 by raising her arms tomorrow in Dubai before embarking on a year where she should once again snatch victories in the mass sprints, perhaps even in France during the second edition of the Tour de France Femmes.
