Top 20 of the best climbers in the peloton in 2023
In 2023, many riders have the ability to win a Grand Tour. After seeing the best climbers in the 20e to the 11e position, here is the top 10 objective of the best peloton climbers in 2023.
10) Richard Carapaz (29 years)
The Ecuadorian is not, at present, not at its best, but he deserves his place in the top 10. The rider transferred to EF Education in the offseason has, let's remember it, ended 2e of the last Tour of Italy. Winner of this same race in 2019, Richard Carapaz still has all the resources and the time needed to compete with the best riders in the peloton, in order to hang, from the top of his 29 years, and 2e Grand Tour on his list. His departure from Ineos will allow him to find new life in the American team, where he is now the asserted leader. He will participate in the Tour de France alongside Rigoberto Uran, where he will try to disrupt Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, as he did in 2021.
9) Romain Bardet (32 years)
The Team DSM rider fully deserves his place here. On track to make a podium on the last Tour of Italy, the Frenchman finally gave up during the 13e stage. He will finally catch up on the Tour de France, where it will end 6e, proof that he still has good recovery abilities. Romain Bardet also seems to be improving in time trials, exercise which he has so lacking in previous years. Finish on the podium of a Grand Tour, he already did, and twice : 2e and 3e of the Tour de France in 2016 and 2017 (is it worth remembering ?). A Romain Bardet at his prime can therefore hope, even if it's hard to imagine, repeat this feat this year, where he planned to participate in the Grande Boucle.
8) Geraint Thomas (36 years)
Despite his 36 years, the Welsh rider still has some under the pedal. Winner of the Tour de Suisse and 3e of the Tour de France last year, Geraint Thomas still has cards to play this year, but this time on the Giro. Normally lined up alongside Geoghegan Hart, Arensman and Sivakov, the leader of Ineos Grenadiers could well surprise people on Italian roads. At his age, winning a Grand Tour seems hard to imagine, but its rolling qualities, his experience and his ever-present climbing talents earned him this 8e place.
7) Jai Hindley (26 years)
How not to quote the winner of the last Tour of Italy ! Jai Hindley managed to reach a new milestone last year, under the colors of the Bora Hansgrohe, by winning the Giro. However, the Australian seems to be struggling to maintain consistency throughout the season, and sometimes it doesn't live up to expectations, especially on one-week races. Has good recovery abilities, Jai Hindley is a rider cut out to win Grand Tours. AT 26 years, he will participate for the first time this year in the Tour de France where he will try to compete with the best.
6) But Henry (28 years)
Three times second in the Vuelta, Enric Mas has already shown he is capable of a Grand Tour podium. Author of a very great second part of the season after a failed Tour de France, the Spaniard seems to be at an excellent level. This remains to be confirmed at the start of the season., but it is practically obvious that the Movistar racer is going to show some great things this year. He goes once again, do the double round / Return, while hoping that he finally fulfills his dream of winning a Grand Tour !
5) Aleksandr Vlasov (26 years)
Aleksandr Vlasov is a very complete runner like all those who will follow in this ranking. Obviously very good climber but also good puncher and good roller, the Russian is a versatile rider destined to win Grand Tours. After having tried the Tour de France last year where he managed to finish 5e overall despite a big fall at the start of the Tour, the rider from Bora Hansgrohe will take part in the Giro this year, with the ambition to win. The Russian is quite capable of it and the Bora Hansgrohe team has certain assets to accomplish this objective.. Patrick Konrad, Lennard Kämna, Matteo Fabbro or the young Giovani Aleotti should accompany him.
4) Remco Evenepoel (23 years)
Impressive year after year, le Belge Remco Evenepoel est, from the top of his 23 years, one of the strongest runners in the world. Evidenced by its successes in the World Championships, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and especially during the Vuelta last year. Winner of the UAE Tour at the start of the season, Remco is already in great shape for this new year 2023. Youngest rider in this classification, yet it already displays 38 victories on his list. The Soudal Quick-Step world champion intends to break all records. He is lining up for the Tour of Italy this year, where he will act as a big favorite, with Primoz Roglic.
3) Primož Roglič (33 years)
The Slovenian from Jumbo Visma was not spared bad luck last year. First unhappy by giving up following several falls on the Tour de France, he will crash and retire again on the Vuelta ! But remember that Primoz Roglic had before that won Paris-Nice and the Critérium du Dauphiné, proof that he was in excellent shape. This year, revengeful, he will participate in the Giro and the Vuelta, with the aim of winning a 4e see a 5e Grand Tour. Well supported with the presence of Wilco Kelderman and Tobias Foss, the Slovenian will therefore have all the cards in hand to win. Especially since he will not share leadership with Jonas Vingegaard.
2) Jonas Vingegaard (26 years)
Difficult to decide between him and his dolphin in the Tour de France : Tadej Pogacar. Surrounded by a great team, Jonas Vingegaard showed his talent to the world, by managing to beat the Slovenian, on the roads of july. Very tough runner, very good rider and excellent climber, he has everything to win the Grande Boucle again. Already a winner in his recovery race (read Gran Camino, with 3 steps), the Dane was quick to show his great form. He started last Sunday on Paris-Nice, alongside Tadej Pogacar, all to offer us a magnificent spectacle ! This duo promises us great battles in the years to come !
1) Tadej Pogacar (24 years)
So there's only him left, the double winner of the Tour de France. Tadej Pogacar is an exceptional runner, able to climb very well, to drive very well and it is in addition to that one of the best, if not the best, puncher in the world. This is what earned him first place in this ranking ahead of Jonas Vingegaard. The latter beat Tadej Pogacar during the last Tour de France, when we thought the Slovenian was invincible. But the UAE Team Emirates rider intends to regain his title next July. Like the Dane, he also started his season very well by winning the Tour of Andalusia, with him too 3 steps. Proof that the two runners are already well above everyone.
From now on, we just have to appreciate these two extraordinary talents to challenge themselves on the most beautiful races in the world. The show will only be more beautiful when you know that Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic and many others have the ability to disturb the two cycling giants !
